The areas of Geography and Science are part of the Language Area of the classroom. Culture is investigated further through stories, cultural celebrations, plays, cooking, and art. Earth’s key elements of air, land and water are introduced in a hands-on manner. Land and Water Forms help the children identify basic forms such as island and lake or strait and isthmus. A set of puzzle maps are utilized by the children to help them learn the names and locations of each continent, the oceans, the countries of each continent, and the individual states of the United States of America. Science studies begin by differentiating between living and non-living things as well as identifying the basic characteristics of plants and animals. Language cards identifying parts of a plant, flowers, trees, mammals, fish, and reptiles are used to learn vocabulary. Study of plants and animals extends to regular nature walks, outdoor gardening, field trips and regular care of classroom pets and plants. Kindergarten students have regular opportunities to engage in more in-depth science experiments, such as using a microscope to see layers of skin and ridges within their fingerprints.
If help and salvation are to come, they can only come from children, for children are the makers of men.
